Cruising Rally Association

When Steve Black introduced offshore sailing rallies to the North American sailing world in 1990, he started a tradition. That tradition is the Caribbean 1500 ... now completing its second full decade ... and named the "Top Offshore Event" by Blue Water Sailing Magazine.

Steve has managed sponsored sailing events for over 25 years, first as Executive Director of U.S. Sailing and now as founder and president of the Cruising Rally Association.

He plans each event with a single-minded focus on a handful of key objectives, striving to:

  • Ensure safe passages
  • Encourage fun, camaraderie, and the thrill of adventure for
participants of all ages and experience levels
  • Engage the fleet in multiple levels of competition
  • Operate smooth, hassle-free events
  • Minimize costs to participants

"Sailing is such an intuitive sport," says Steve Black (upper left), "Almost always what you think is the right course of action is the right course of action. Most sailors make good decisions. They are quick to learn. Today, everything with initials (EPA and OSHA, etc.) make decisions for us. There are few opportunities to make decisions for ourselves. Offshore sailing is one of those."

OUR MISSION

The mission of the Cruising Rally Association is to make the adventure and camaraderie of offshore sailing come alive for all event participants, first-timers and veterans alike
